Basti therapy cleanses the large intestine are by introduction of medicated liquids into the colon through the rectum.
During the procedure of Basti Panchakarma Treatment, stomach should be empty. So the therapy is performed early in the morning and in the evening before any food-intake. Medicated liquids like Dashamula tea (a combination of ten roots: bilva, agnimantha, shyonka, patala, gambhari, bruhati, kantakari, shalaparni, prishniparni and gokshura) and Sesame oil are commonly used for Basti therapy.

Nirooha and Anuwasan Basti are the types of Basti used in Panchakarma. People who are not applicable for Nirooha Basti are advised for Anuwasan Basti and vice-versa.
Nirooha Basti uses water based decoctions of purifying herbs. These herbal liquids are retained in the colon for sometime. This helps in the absorption of useful ingredients while their purifying influence moves throughout the body and waste material and toxins gets expelled.
In Anuwasan therapy warm herbal oil with small amounts of decoction is applied to rejuvenate and nourish the body.
Anuwasan Basti is used to treat arthritic conditions and nervous disorders, obstruction of urine, stools and flatus, Amenorrhoea and infertility. This therapy is not for people suffering from piles, obesity, intestinal worms, anemia and jaundice.
Though both Nirooha Basti and Anuwasan Basti are not suitable for malnourished and weak people or those suffering from tuberculosis, ascites, peritonitis, intestinal obstruction, dysentery, diabetes, skin diseases and asthma.
