What is Kapha Dosha?

Every one ask's "What is Kapha Dosha?" Kapha is a combination of water and earth element and is responsible for governing the lubrication and structure of the body. It holds all the cells together and forms the muscle, fat, bone, and sinew to give a basis for physical structure. The kapha dosha possess heavy, slow, steady, solid, cold, soft and oily qualities. The main dominated area of kapha in the body are chest, nose, mouth, stomach, throat, head, joints, cytoplasm, plasma and body secretions.

Kapha provides the body with resistance, lubrication to the joints, strength, vigor, energy, stability and immunity. Kapha people are strong build and possess excellent stamina. They possess fair and bright complexion with glowing skin. The hairs are dark, black and thin. They have attractive eyes are usually black or blue in appearance. Kapha people possess very strong immune system and have sharp memory. They have a tendency to gain weight very easily as they possess slow digestion and and are slow movers. They like to enjoy long and undisturbed sleep. They take time to excite sexually but once excited, they are show long endurance to satisfy.

The positive aspects of balanced kapha includes exceptional memory retention, relaxed, stability, affectionate, loving, forgiveness, calmness, good temperament and reliability. In contrary to the the negative side of kapha are laziness, greedy nature, lack of comprehension and slow learning capacity.

While a balance in kapha is indicated by strong physical strength, strong immune system, calmness , mental toughness, determination steadiness, endurance and adaptability, any imbalance in kapha can be characterized by lethargy, dull thinking, greediness, depression, slow reaction, drowsiness, obesity, congestion in throat and nose, nausea, diabetes, fever, edema, indigestion, pain in joints and high cholesterol level.

Complications of kapha Imbalance

Kapha governs the body structure and provides lubrication to the joints. So, it is important to balance the kapha dosha in the body in order to maintain a good health. If there is an imbalance in the kapha dosha in the body it can result in several diseases like flu, depression, sinus, hay fever, gallbladder disorders, allergy, obesity, diabetes and several respiratory problems such as asthma and wheezing.

Measures to balance Kapha Dosha

Kapha is the heaviest of all the three doshas and it is very important to maintain a balanced state of kapha in the body to keep the body physically fit and mentally sound. This can be done easily by keeping certain things in mind.

  • Heavy, and oily foods should be avoided.
  • Dairy products and iced drinks are not recommended.
  • Food with pungent, bitter, and astringent tastes are highly recommended.
  • Go to bed early in the night and rise early in the morning.
  • Warm, dry, light food cooked with less water and fat is recommended.
  • Practice of regular exercise such as yoga, aerobics and meditation is appreciable.
  • Warm and bright colors such as yellow, orange and red are preferred.
  • Avoid unusual and untimely sleep.

Kappa provides strength to the body. The moistness, lubrication, fertility, stability, memory are provided by kappa. So, it is very important from the health point of view to maintain a good balance of kapha in the body so as to remain fit for a longer period of time.
